God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty. (1Corinthians 1:27b)
When I read this phrase in 1Corinthians, I am comforted to remember that Father God has chosen me in spite of my weaknesses.
Being one of His ‘weak’ ones means that anything God accomplishes through me is to His glory alone!
It is comforting also that, by His grace, He enables me to stay in His pathway and follow His instructions. It is because of His grace that His strength is made perfect in me regardless of my weakness:
And He (Messiah) said unto me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you: for My strength is made perfect (complete, mature) in weakness’. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Messiah may rest upon me. (2Corinthians 12:9)
The Way of Yahuwah [the LORD] is strength to the upright. (Proverb 10:29a) [Yahuwah Elohim – the Hebrew name for the LORD God]
Before I knew ‘The Way of Yahuwah [the LORD]’, when I was walking in my own selfish ways, my life was one failure after another.
But now,… after finally humbling myself and admitting to God that ‘my ways’ had left me deep in troubles and problems, then God began to lift me up out of the ‘miry clay’ of despair and hopelessness (Psalm 40:2).
And now,… since that time, when I became Born-Again, I began to take in the spiritual strength and riches of the root of Father’s excellent and good olive tree (Romans 11:17,24).
Little by little, as I studied God’s Word, I began to learn that whenever I seek Yahuwah and His Ways and His strength, He always rewards me (Hebrews 11:6)!
Little by little, I began the process of growing from strength to strength, from grace to grace, and from glory to glory (Psalm 84:7; 2Peter 3:18; 2Corinthians 3:18).
Little by little, I began to understand that, in spite of all my problems, my flaws and shame, Father God loves me immensely!
For some of us, confidently believing in Father’s love is a daily renewal process. We may ask ourselves, “How can I be loved when I have stumbled and failed Him so many times; when I am weak and feeble so often?” And yet, it seems like Father delights in the inadequate and weak ones, the ‘nobodys’ of this world. Such are the ones that Father seeks in order to fulfill His purposes:
For you see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 27) but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28) and vile things of the world, and things which are despised, has God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are: 29) that no flesh should glory in His presence. (1Corinthians 1:26-29)
It is the so-called ‘foolish ones’ that Father uses for great purposes:
- Noah was drunk
- Moses stuttered
- Samson was hotheaded
- David had an affair
- Gideon doubted
- Jeremiah was depressed
- Peter was afraid of death
- Jacob was a liar
These examples are not excuses for us to wallow in our failures. Instead, these should give us hope that God is well able to change and strengthen us, and to help us repent of our selfish, carnal ways.
By His grace and mercy, if we will cry out to Him, then little by little, Father can give us the desire, the courage, and the strength to walk more completely in His ways, and to honour Him with all our heart.
He works deeply within our heart, by His Holy Spirit, helping us to trust Him, to follow Messiah’s example, and to conform us into His image (see Romans 8:28-29).
Sometimes immediately, or sometimes after a struggle, we eventually want to do what is well-pleasing to Father. He gives us the “want-to,” to do His will, as well as the power to do it. Little by little, we learn to depend on Father’s strength, to overcome our weaknesses, and to overcome the fear of reproach from friends and family (Philippians 2:13; Zechariah 4:6).
We still encounter problems, troubles, and failures. There are still parts of our old lifestyle we want to hold on to. We continue to have people in our life that irritate us, frighten us, and worry us. But we are Yahuwah’s precious children. And we have the Holy Spirit to caution us, direct us, convict us, comfort us, and encourage us, helping us to become “DO-ers” of His Word.
“To what will you look for help if you will not look to that which is stronger than yourself?” — C. S. Lewis
Our Unshakable Conviction
Choosing the Way of Yahuwah is strength and protection and gladness for us. By His strength we are changed from glory to glory. Going from strength to strength is a good description of what life is like as we begin to grow in the knowledge and grace of our Saviour, Messiah Yahushua [the Hebrew name for Christ Jesus].
But we must determine and choose (at times, continually re-choose), to believe and receive Father’s Word for His children:
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Yahushua Messiah [Jesus Christ] to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6) to the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He has made us accepted in The Beloved. (Ephesians 1:5-6)
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (Matthew 3:17)
Father God has accepted each one of us as His own child because of our faith in His Beloved Son. The unshakable conviction within our heart must firmly declare:
“I am in Messiah, united with Him, cleansed by His precious blood, and therefore I am part of Yahuwah’s family.”
For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16) The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. (Romans 8:15-16)
Therefore if any man be in Messiah, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2Corinthians 5:17)
For you are all the children of God by faith in Messiah Yahushua [Christ Jesus]. (Galatians 3:26)
Yahuwah Elohim is for us! We are shielded and protected in Messiah Yahushua!
J. Hudson Taylor
Let us recall some of the things that J. Hudson Taylor said, the British Christian missionary to China who spent 51 years in China (1832 – 1905):
“I am not especially gifted, and am shy by nature, but my gracious and merciful God and Father inclined Himself to me; and when I was weak in faith He strengthened me. He taught me in my helplessness to rest on Him, and to pray, even about little things, in which another might have felt well able to handle himself.” – J. Hudson Taylor
“A little thing is a little thing, but faithfulness in little things is a great thing! If we are faithful to God in little things, we shall gain experience and strength that will be helpful to us in the more serious trials of life.” – J. Hudson Taylor
“All God’s giants have been weak men who did great things for God because they reckoned on His power and presence with them.” – J. Hudson Taylor
Day by day, Father God can renew our strength, our faithfulness, our hope, and our love for Him (Isaiah 40:31). And the more we walk in obedience to God’s Word, the more understanding Father reveals to us by His Holy Spirit.
So by Father’s mercy and grace, whenever we need His strength, whenever we need to know the Way of Yahuwah, in the small things and in the great things, let us ask Father to give us the strength and courage and determination to honour Him in all we do. Let us remember these precious promises from our heavenly Father:
Ask and it shall be given. (Matthew 7:7-8)
I cried unto You, O Yahuwah, and You strengthen me with strength in my soul! (Psalms 138:3)
Oh how great is Your goodness (Yahuwah), which You have laid up for those who fear You; which You have worked for those who trust in You before the sons of men! 24) All that hope in Yahuwah, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart. (Psalms 31:19,24)
Call unto Me [Yahuwah], and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty (difficult) things, which you have not known. (Jeremiah 33:3)
These precious promises give us hope for the many moments when we need His strength.
