When we believe on Yahushua Messiah [the Hebrew name for Jesus Christ Jesus], as our Saviour, we come into God’s family by adoption. We receive the Spirit of adoption, whereby we are then accepted by God and can talk with God as our heavenly Father.
It is then that we naturally and freely desire to talk to God as our “Abba” Father — our “Daddy”.
‘Abba’ refers to the Aramaic word for father, which comes from the Hebrew word for father. Sometimes ‘Abba’ is referred to as ‘Daddy.’
King David knew Yahuwah Elohim [the Hebrew name for the LORD God] as a father!
“He (King David) shall cry unto me: “You (Yahuwah) are my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.” (Psalms 89:26)
King David often expressed the Father’s heart of mercy and compassion toward His children:
Yahuwah [the LORD] is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 9) He will not always chide: neither will He keep His anger for ever…. 13) Like as a father pities his children, so Yahuwah pities [has compassion on] them that fear Him. 14) For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. (Psalms 103:8-14)
King David had “tasted” of the goodness, the lovingkindness, and the mercy of the heavenly Father. He wanted others to know the Father’s goodness, as he said:
“O taste and see that the LORD [Yahuwah] is good!” (Psalms 34:8; see also Ps 36:7-10)
David continually wanted to know his heavenly Father better! David asked Father many times, for understanding, good judgment and knowledge according to God’s Word (Psalms 119:66,73,116).
The Prophet Hosea
The prophet Hosea tells more about wanting to know Yahuwah better. Hosea gives us a principle of Biblical truth:
Come, and let us return unto Yahuwah [the LORD] . . . . 3) Then shall we know, IF we follow on to know Yahuwah . . . (Hosea 6:1-3).
In the above passage, notice the word “if.”
Hosea tells us IF we will turn, or return, to Yahuwah . . .
IF we will follow, run after, and pursue Yahuwah and His ways . . .
THEN we will come to truly know our Heavenly Father! We will then begin to discover how refreshing and rewarding it is to follow Him — refreshing as a gentle rain!
This is how we “TASTE” of God.
If we will follow after Him, seeking to know Yahuwah, by obeying His written Word, walking in His ways — then we will begin to know what it means to “taste” of Father’s goodness!
By seeking to know Yahuwah, by living according to His Word, then we will begin to know Father. We then learn that God truly is a good and loving Father. We will want to call Him our Abba – our “Daddy.”
But how can we begin to truly know Yahuwah?
Hosea’s exhortation to ‘follow on to know Yahuwah’ is the heavenly Father’s desire for us — that we would stay close to Father, ‘following’ Him, ‘knowing’ Him!
Let’s look at some practical ways we can come to know our Abba Father.
To Obey is Better
Following Yahuwah, and knowing Him, can be summed up in one simple phrase:
To obey is better! (1Samuel 15:22)
Every parent desires obedient children, including our Abba Father. Obeying our heavenly Father is easy when we come to Him, as His little child.
Yahuwah has given us every provision needed and necessary to be obedient to Him. He loves us, and He would not ask us to do something that is beyond our ability!
Abba Father has given us clear and definite ‘House Rules’ for His family.
Here is just one example:
Who shall ascend into the hill of Yahuwah [the LORD]? or who shall stand in His holy place? 4) He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. 5) He shall receive the blessing from Yahuwah [the LORD], and righteousness from the God of his salvation. (Psalms 24:3-5)
Verse four gives us three ‘House Rules’ within Father’s family. Let’s look at these three.
“He who has clean hands and a pure heart” speaks of our actions and motives. If we want to follow Yahuwah’s ways, then we will seek to do what is right and good in His sight. We will want to maintain our honesty and integrity in all we do so that we may be pleasing to our Abba Father (1John 3:22).
“He who has not lifted up his soul unto vanity” speaks of one who walks according to Yahuwah’s written Word. This means not only doing what the Scriptures call us to do, but also avoiding what we are called to avoid.
We are to avoid all forms of “vanity”, which is falsehood and idolatry. This means we are to avoid indulging in pagan religious traditions, known in Scripture as ‘the way of the heathen’. Some popular examples of heathen religious practices are known today as Valentines Day, Easter, Halloween, Christmas, astrology, yoga, and a host of others.
If we desire to follow Yahuwah, then we will want to honour Him by making sure our daily walk and lifestyle are in harmony with His ‘House Rules’ written in the Bible. We will desire to refrain from participating in the world’s traditions of ‘vain’ pagan practices, which are forbidden by our Abba Father (See Jeremiah 10:1-5; Leviticus 18:3; 20:23; Deuteronomy 12:30-31; Ezekiel 20:32; Isaiah 47:8-15).
“He who does not swear deceitfully” speaks of maintaining our integrity, by being true to our word, and by speaking words that show forth honour unto Yahuwah. We will want to be honest to ourselves, as well as to Yahuwah and to others. We will seek to have pure motives and a right spirit, avoiding any false practices (See Psalms 51).
These three ‘house rules’ for Abba’s family are easy to walk in because of our love for Abba Father, and because of His abundant grace to help us and lead us according to His Word! Notice also: we receive His blessing when we walk according to these ‘House Rules’ (see verse 5 above).
Maintain a Humble Heart
But even more basic than these three ‘House Rules’ is that we simply maintain a humble heart, always coming before Him with child-like faith, as Yahushua tells us:
And Yahushua [Jesus] called a little child unto Him, and set him in the midst of them, 3) And said, Truly I say unto you, Except you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4) Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:2-4; see also Micah 6:8)
As His adopted sons and daughters, we come to Yahuwah in humility and reverence to learn of Him, just as Messiah urges us:
Come unto me, all you that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls. 30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)
We sit at His feet, and begin to learn His written Word, His character, His instructions.
As we learn to be a “DO-er” of His written Word, we naturally begin to trust Him. We trust Him because His character is truly trust-WORTHY:
“. . .Yahuwah Elohim – merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7) keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. . .” (Exodus 34:6-7)
“. . .and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Yahuwah, and keep His commandments” (Exodus 20:6).
Learning of Him, studying His WORD, understanding His greatness, His goodness, His mercy — we want to obey Him. More and more, the sensitive love [agape love] of the Holy Spirit is shed abroad in our hearts (Romans 5:5).
As the self-LESS love of the Holy Spirit grows stronger in our heart, He gives us more grace for further obedience.
It is our obedience to the truth of Yahuwah’s written Word that edifies and strengthens us. We can then discern the Holy Spirit guiding us into the Way of Truth, into the pathway of the upright (Proverbs 16:17; John 16:13). Our obedience is the essence of abiding in Him (John 15:10; 1John 2:6).
Willing and Obedient
If we have committed our life to Messiah, seeking Him with all our heart, willing to be obedient to Father’s WORD [obedience to Messiah], then we will be enabled to follow on to know Yahuwah.
If we are to walk with Him by faith, then we must trust that coming into the knowledge of His truth is possible and attainable!
Here are some basic steps to remember, to help us “taste” of God — that is, to follow Messiah, to press in to know Yahuwah as our Abba, our Daddy:
- Learn and obey Father’s written WORD [both Old and New Testament writings, with no twisted deceptions, and no man-made additions or eliminations];
- Cultivate the Fruit of the Spirit;
- Maintain an on-going repentant heart;
- Learn to discern the leading of the Holy Spirit, which will always be in agreement with His written Word.
The more we seek to follow and obey Him, the easier and the more joyful it is, to stay on His pathway and keep His ‘House Rules’ (Proverbs 13:6)!
Let us remember also, that in all our efforts to follow our Abba Father: He is a ‘very present help’ (Psalms 46:1)!!
And even though it happens that we experience trials and testings in our walk with Yahuwah, He has promised to be WITH US through the difficulties, holding us by His righteous right hand:
- When I cry unto You, then shall my enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me (Psalms 56:9).
- Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me: You shall stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and Your right hand shall save me. (Psalms 138:7; see also Psalms 23).
Let Us Therefore. . .
Let us therefore be diligent to walk in the ways of our heavenly Abba Father, walking according to His Word.
Let us keep the ‘House Rules’ for God’s family by keeping our motives pure before Him, avoiding pagan religious practices and traditions, and maintaining our character with honesty and integrity.
Let us to be watchful and discerning of all ‘spiritual knowledge’ as something to be examined, making sure it is pure, truth-FULL, strictly according to Yah’s Word, and edifying to the saving of our souls!
Let us be on our guard against the utter foolishness of :
… ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2Timothy 3:7).
Sadly, those who continue to gain knowledge of the Scriptures without obeying it, are those who never come to the knowledge of the Truth!
Following On to Know Yahuwah
Finally, let us look very briefly at two Scripture passages that give us two vital steps in our journey to follow on to know Yahuwah:
1. “And this is life eternal, that they might know You the only true God, and Yahushua Messiah [Jesus Christ], whom You hast sent.” (John 17:3)
The above passage reminds us that knowing Yahushua Messiah is the First Step to know Yahuwah as Father.
2. “Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am Yahuwah [the LORD] that sanctify them. . . 19) I am Yahuwah Elohim [the LORD your God]; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; 20) And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am Yahuwah Elohim [the LORD your God].” (Ezekiel 20:12, 19-20)
This above passage reminds us that the keeping of Yahuwah’s Sabbaths is the Second Step to know Yahuwah as King of the universe, Creator of all things, Yahuwah Elohim!
These two initial steps are vital steps in our ongoing quest to “taste”, and thereby to know the goodness of Yahuwah as our Abba Father.
There is None Like unto Yahuwah Elohim
Over and over, we find in the Scriptures the declaration that “There is NONE like unto Yahuwah Elohim!” (Exodus 8:10; 9:14; Deuteronomy 33:26; 2Samuel 7:22; 1Chronicles 17:20; Psalms 86:8; Isaiah 46:9; Jeremiah 10:6-7)
Oh may it be firmly planted in our heart that there is none like unto our heavenly Father:
“There is none like unto the God of Yeshurun, who rides through the heavens to our help!” (Deuteronomy 33:26)
Yeshurun [Jeshurun] means the “upright one” or the “beloved one,” and is a symbolic name for Israel [which includes all those “grafted-in” by faith in Messiah], and describes her ideal character.
When we are needing help or rescue of any kind, we can call upon Yahuwah Elohim, the God of Yeshurun, who rides through the heavens to our help — to help us, His beloved children!! This is one way we come to know the loving heart of our Abba Father!
Remember: just as any loving, earthly father does all he can to help his children follow his ‘house rules,’ so also our loving, heavenly Father does the same thing!
May it be that you and I will determine to read, study, and most importantly, obey God’s written Word! This is the only way we can begin to truly know our Creator and the desires of His heart.
This is how we ‘taste and see‘ (Psalms 34:8) how GOOD and wonderful Yahuwah Elohim is — our loving, heavenly Father!
