Who are the sons [the children] of God?
And how can His children come to know Him as their heavenly Father?
The Scriptures give us the answers! First let’s see who the children [sons and daughters] of God are:
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of Elohim (God), they are the sons [children] of Elohim (God). 15) For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:14-15)
In the above passage, we see that those who are led by the Spirit of God, they are the children [sons and daughters] of God.
Through Messiah Yahushua [Christ Jesus], the children of God are the adopted children of the Most High God, Yahuwah Elohim [the LORD God], walking according to His Word.
When we believe on Yahushua Messiah as our Saviour, we come into Yahuwah’s family by adoption. We receive the Spirit of adoption, whereby we are then accepted by God and can talk with God as our Father. It is then that we naturally and freely desire to talk to God as our “Abba” Father — our “Daddy”.
‘Abba’ refers to the Aramaic word for father, which comes from the Hebrew word for father. Sometimes ‘Abba’ is referred to as ‘Daddy.’
King David knew Yahuwah as a father, as we see in Psalms 89:26 – “He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.”
King David often expressed the Father’s heart of mercy and compassion toward His children:
Yahuwah [the LORD] is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 9) He will not always chide: neither will He keep His anger for ever…. 13) Like as a father pitieth his children, so Yahuwah pitieth [has compassion on] them that fear Him. 14) For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust. (Psalms 103:8-14)
King David had “tasted” of the goodness, the lovingkindness and mercy of the heavenly Father, and therefore he wanted more: “O taste and see that Yahuwah is good!” (Psalms 34:8; see also Ps 36:7-10)
David wanted to know his heavenly Father better by asking Him for understanding, good judgment and knowledge according to God’s Word (Psalms 119:66,73, 116).
The Prophet Hosea
The prophet Hosea tells more about wanting to know Yahuwah better. Hosea gives us a principle of Biblical truth:
Come, and let us return unto Yahuwah [the LORD] . . . . 3) Then shall we know, IF we follow on to know Yahuwah. . . . (Hosea 6:1-3).
In the above passage, notice the word “if.”
Hosea tells us IF we will turn back to Yahuwah, IF we will follow, run after, and pursue walking in Yahuwah’s ways — THEN we will come to truly know our Heavenly Father! We will then begin to discover how refreshing and rewarding it is to follow Him, as refreshing as a gentle rain!
If we follow after Him, seeking to know Yahuwah, by obeying His Word and walking in His ways — this is what it means to “taste” of Father’s goodness — then we will begin to know Him more and more; then we will learn . . . that He truly is a good and loving Father, and we will want to call Him our Abba – our “Daddy.”
But how can we begin to truly know Yahuwah?
The prophet Hosea’s exhortation to ‘follow on to know Yahuwah’ is an expression of the heavenly Father’s desire for us — that we would stay close to Him, and ‘follow’ Him, in order to ‘know’ Him!
Let’s now look at some practical ways we can come to know our Abba Father.
To Obey is Better
Following Yahuwah, and knowing Him, can be summed up in one simple phrase: To obey is better. . . ! (1Samuel 15:22)
Every parent desires obedient children, including our Abba Father. Obeying our heavenly Father is easy when we come to Him as His little child.
Yahuwah has given us every provision needed and necessary to be obedient to Him. He loves us, and He would not ask us to do something that is beyond our ability!
Abba Father has given us clearly, in many places in the Scriptures, the ‘house rules’ for His family. Here is just one passage:
Who shall ascend into the hill of Yahuwah [the LORD]? or who shall stand in His holy place? 4) He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. 5) He shall receive the blessing from Yahuwah [the LORD], and righteousness from the God of his salvation. (Psalms 24:3-5)
Verse four gives us three ‘house rules’ within Father’s family. Let’s look at these three.
“He who has clean hands and a pure heart” speaks of our actions and our motives. If we love Yahuwah, and want to follow in His ways, then we will seek to do what is right and good in His sight. We will want to maintain our honesty and integrity in all we do so that we may be pleasing unto our Abba Father (1John 3:22).
“He who has not lifted up his soul unto vanity” speaks of walking according to Yahuwah’s Word. This includes not only doing what the Scriptures call us to do, but also avoiding what we are called to avoid. We are to avoid all forms of idolatry, which includes indulging in pagan religious traditions known in Scripture as ‘the way of the heathen.’ Some popular examples of these heathen religious practices are known today as Valentines Day, Easter, Halloween, Christmas, astrology, yoga, and a host of others.
If we desire to follow Messiah, we will want to honour Yahuwah, by making sure our daily walk and lifestyle are in line with His ‘house rules’ written in the Bible. We will desire to refrain from participating in the world’s traditions of ‘vain’ pagan practices forbidden by our Abba Father (See Jeremiah 10:1-5; Leviticus 18:3; 20:23; Deuteronomy 12:30-31; Ezekiel 20:32; Isaiah 47:8-15; and link below).
“He who does not swear deceitfully” speaks of maintaining our integrity, by being true to our word, and by speaking words that show forth honour unto Yahuwah. We will want to be honest to ourselves, as well as to Yahuwah and to others, always being sensitive to have pure motives and a right spirit, avoiding any false practices or motives (Psalms 51).
These three ‘house rules’ for Abba’s family are easy to walk in because of our love for Abba Father, and because of His abundant grace to help us and lead us according to His Word! Also notice that we receive His blessing when we walk according to these ‘house rules’ (verse 5).
But even more basic than these three ‘house rules’ is that we simply maintain a humble heart, always coming before Him with child-like faith, as Yahushua tells us:
And Yahushua [Jesus] called a little child unto Him, and set him in the midst of them, 3) And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4) Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:2-4; see also Micah 6:8)
As His adopted sons and daughters, we come to Yahuwah in humility and reverence to learn of Him, just as Yahushua urges us:
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)
We sit at His feet, and begin to learn His Word, His character, His ways, and His instructions. And as we learn to be a “DO-er” of His Word, we then begin to trust Him, because He truly is of a character that we can trust:
“. . .Yahuwah Elohim – merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7) keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. . .” (Exodus 34:6-7)
“. . .and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Yahuwah, and keep His commandments” (Exodus 20:6).
As we learn of Him, studying His WORD, learning of His greatness, His goodness, and His mercy, we also learn to obey Him. Then more and more, the sensitive love [agape love] of the Holy Spirit will be shed abroad in our hearts (Romans 5:5).
As the self-less love of the Holy Spirit grows stronger in our heart, He gives us more grace for further obedience. It is our obedience to the pure truth of Yahuwah’s Word that edifies us, as the Holy Spirit guides us into the way of Truth, into the pathway of the upright (Proverbs 16:17; John 16:13). Our obedience in this manner is the essence of abiding in Him (John 15:10; 1John 2:6).
Willing and Obedient
If we have committed our life to Messiah, and if we are seeking Him with all our heart, willing to be obedient to Father’s WORD [obedience to Messiah], then we will be able to follow on, to know Yahuwah. If we are to walk with Him by faith, then we must trust that coming into the knowledge of His truth is possible and attainable!
Here are some essential steps, that will enable us to follow Messiah, and to press in to know Yahuwah as our Abba, our Daddy:
- Learn and obey Father’s WORD [both Old and New Testament writings, with no twisted deceptions, and no man-made additions or eliminations];
- Cultivate the Fruit of the Spirit;
- Maintain an on-going repentant heart;
- Learn to discern the leading of the Holy Spirit, which will always be in agreement with His written Word.
Our Abba Father is a ‘very present help’ in all our efforts to follow Him (Psalms 46:1)!! And the more we seek Him, follow Him, and obey Him, the easier it is, and the more joyful it is, to stay on His pathway and keep His ‘house rules’ (Proverbs 13:6)!
And even though it often happens that we experience trials and testings in our walk with Yahuwah, He has promised to be WITH US through the difficulties, holding us by His righteous right hand:
- When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me (Psalms 56:9).
- Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me: You shall stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and Your right hand shall save me. (Psalms 138:7; see also Psalms 23).
Let Us Therefore. . .
Let us therefore be diligent to walk in the ways of our heavenly Abba Father, walking according to His Word.
Let us keep the ‘house rules’ for His family by keeping our motives pure before Him, avoiding all pagan religious practices and traditions, and maintaining our words and speech with honesty and integrity.
Let us to be watchful, carefully considering all ‘spiritual knowledge’ as something to be examined, making sure that it pure, truth-FULL, strictly according to Yah’s Word, and edifying to the saving of our souls!
Let us be on our guard against the utter foolishness of :
… ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2Timothy 3:7).
Those who continue to gain knowledge of the Scriptures without obeying it, are those who never come to the knowledge of the Truth!
Following On to Know Yahuwah
Up to this point we have looked at heart attitudes and generalities of following Messiah, and of coming to know Abba Father. Let us now look briefly at two Scripture passages that give us two vital steps we must take in our journey of following on to know Yahuwah:
1. “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Yahushua Messiah [Jesus Christ], whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3)
This passage reminds us that knowing Yahushua Messiah is the First Key Step in knowing the Father Yahuwah!
2. “Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am Yahuwah [the LORD] that sanctify them. . . 19) I am Yahuwah Elohim [the LORD your God]; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; 20) And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am Yahuwah Elohim [the LORD your God].” (Ezekiel 20:12, 19-20)
The above passage reminds us that the keeping of Yahuwah’s Sabbaths is the Second Key Step in knowing Yahuwah Elohim!
These two initial steps are merely a glimpse of what it takes to come to know the goodness of the Living God, Creator of all things — yet they are vital steps in our ongoing quest to “taste” and thereby know Yahuwah as our Abba Father.
There is None Like unto Yahuwah Elohim
Over and over, we find in the Scriptures the declaration that “There is NONE like unto Yahuwah Elohim!” (Exodus 8:10; 9:14; Deuteronomy 33:26; 2Samuel 7:22; 1Chronicles 17:20; Psalms 86:8; Isaiah 46:9; Jeremiah 10:6-7)
Oh may it be firmly planted in our heart and mind that there is none like unto our heavenly Father: “There is none like unto the God of Yeshurun, who rides through the heavens to our help!” (Deuteronomy 33:26)
Yeshurun [Jeshurun], which means the “upright one” or the “beloved one,” is a symbolic name for Israel [including all those grafted-in by faith through Messiah], describing her ideal character.
When we are needing help and rescue of any kind, we can call upon Yahuwah Elohim, the God of Yeshurun, who rides through the heavens to our help — to help us, His upright and beloved children!! That describes the loving heart of our Abba Father!
Let us remember therefore that just as any loving, earthly father does all he can to help his children to follow in his ways, and to be obedient his ‘house rules,’ so also our loving, heavenly Father does the same thing!
May it be that you and I will determine to read, study, and obey His Word, for this is the only way we can begin to truly know our Creator and the desires of His heart. This is the start. This is how we ‘taste and see‘ (Psalms 34:8) how good and wonderful Yahuwah Elohim is . . . as our loving, heavenly Father!
