In the midst of darkness, turmoil, and the storms of this life, we have a beacon to guide us safely to our destination: God’s promises to His people.
God has given us many promises of well-being, strength, and victory — promises that give us direction on how to come out of many difficulties. Those who diligently search God’s Word, to seek out and take hold of His promises, are greatly encouraged by the results.
Corrie ten Boom once said, “Let God’s promises shine on your problems.” God’s promises shine as a ‘light’ in the midst of darkness, and are given to us to help us solve our problems.
We all need to ‘take hold’ of the promises of Yahuwah Elohim [the Hebrew name for the LORD God].
But what does it mean to ‘take hold’ of Yahuwah’s promises?
First of all, it means to understand that Yahuwah’s promises are His Words of commitment to His people — committing Himself to do [or not to do] something, for those who will trust Him and believe His Word.
Yah’s promises are His commitments to His believing children to show Himself strong on their behalf:
For the eyes of Yahuwah [the LORD] run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward Him [fully committed to Him]. (2Chronicles 16:9a)
To take hold of Yah’s promises is to seize them as though they belong to us!
If we take Yah’s promises as our own possession, then we will guard them, and value them as our own treasure! We will often say them out loud as a way of strengthening our grip on them!
But, for His promises to be valid and effective, as the above verse indicates, we must be committed to follow Yahuwah with a true and sincere heart.
When we make a sincere commitment to Yahuwah through His Son, Yahushua Messiah [the Hebrew name for Jesus Christ], then we can be confident that the heavenly Father will, in turn, commit Himself [and His promises] to us!
Yahuwah’s commitments — His promises — are deserving of our efforts to firmly ‘take hold’ of them, because they are ‘exceedingly great and precious’:
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (2Peter 1:2-4)
This Scripture passage teaches us that it is by Yah’s exceedingly great and precious promises that we become partakers of Messiah’s divine nature.
We first receive the seed of this divine nature when we become Born-Again through Yahushua Messiah [Jesus Christ], who is the ‘Seed’ of the Word planted within our heart. Then, as we study His written Words, pray, and diligently seek Him, the Seed begins to grow and take root within us.
It is in this way, that we grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Saviour. It is in this way also, that we learn how to apply [take hold of] the precious promises to our lives, and to receive the abundance of His divine nature, His character in our own lives (2Timothy 1:7).
The heavenly Father encourages us that all of His promises are available for all of His children through Messiah:
For the Son of God, Yahushua Messiah [Jesus Christ], whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in Him it is always Yes. For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him [Messiah]. That is why it is through Him [Messiah] that we utter our Amen to God for His glory. (2Corinthians 1:19-20)
As this passage reveals, if we are IN Messiah, through the New Birth, then we, as Believers in Messiah, can take hold of any one of Yahuwah’s promises personally, and trust Him to fulfill His Word to us. What abundant love!
He Goes With Us
One of Yahuwah’s promises is His presence WITH us, wherever we go:
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for Yahuwah Elohim [the LORD thy God], He it is that goes with you; He will not fail you, nor forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:6)
This promise is repeated in several places throughout the Scriptures. Yahuwah wants us to know, and take hold of this: that He is with us!
If we personally apply this promise to ourselves, and to the fulfilment of Father’s plans in our life, then we will know His strength and good courage. With His constant presence with us, and with Him on our side (Psalms 56:9), then we can be confident that Yah’s purposes for us will prevail: He will not fail us, nor forsake us!
Can you and I grasp the enormity of this promise? Can we firmly ‘take hold’ of this promise of His Word?
What would it be like to truly take possession of this promise?
It would be like having a unit of military soldiers assigned to us personally, to stand with us at all times, and to support us everywhere we go — to warn us of the many dangers along our path, and to guide us through times of darkness and uncertainty.
Who would not be confident with such a company of support?!?
The Word of God on Good Ground
Oh dear Thirsty Souls, may the truth of Yah’s promises take deep root into our heart and soul! May His Word be so rooted within us that we would be like ‘good ground’ — those who hear the Word of God, keep it, hold tightly to it, even through all opposition, and thus bring forth fruit:
But that [the Word of God] on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. (Luke 8:15)
As this verse teaches, we need an honest and good heart to begin to ‘take hold’ of Yah’s Word. Only then can He begin to produce within us, the good fruit of righteousness — our works of obedience to His Words, after our New Birth (Philippians 1:9-11 and Proverbs 31:31).
If we are to mature in our faith, we must be of an honest and good heart, seeking to walk in the Light of God’s WORD. We do this by praying for God’s mercy and grace to help us (John 14:13), and by learning for ourselves, and applying to ourselves, what Father has promised us in His Word.
And the promise – that He is with us wherever we go – is a promise that insures confidence and strength in the midst of difficulties.
The Angel of Yahuwah
This promise, that Yahuwah is with us, is repeated often and with different wording in other verses:
- The angel of Yahuwah [the LORD] encamps round about them that fear Him, and delivers them. (Psalms 34:7)
- For He [Yahuwah] shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. (Psalms 91:11)
- And he [Elisha] answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, Yahuwah [LORD], I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And Yahuwah opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. (2Kings 6:16 -17)
- Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. My God hath sent His angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before Him, innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. (Daniel 6:21-22)
- …the angels … are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? (Hebrews 1:13-14)
- Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. (Isaiah 41:10)
These verses remind us that the promises of Yah’s strength and presence, and His ministering angels, are for His children, for those who love and trust Him, for those who are walking in the Fear of the LORD.
And though we may have to go through sufferings and persecutions as Daniel did, and as his three friends did (see Daniel 3); and though we may be rejected, or even killed because of our trust and devotion to Yahuwah and His Word — yet we will trust in Father’s plans and purposes, because He is with us!
No trials or tribulations will separate us from Yahuwah’s love and commitment to us. He will not forsake us in life or at death, or even on the Day of Judgment because. . . “this is the will of Him that sent me [Yahushua Messiah], that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:40)
They Did Great Things
If we will think honestly about Father’s astonishing promises, then we would never refuse to follow Him whole-heartedly! He has made us to be more than conquerors through Messiah because of His great love for us!
Yahuwah has given unto us His exceedingly great and precious promises so that we, His beloved children, might be a partaker of His divine nature — a divine nature of courage, confidence, triumph, and joy!
