Everyone knows the beauty and ever-changing nature of clouds. These multi-coloured masses in the sky often demand our observation and attention.
Clouds are heavenly formations that constantly challenge our understanding. They force us to admit the wonder and mystery of God’s creation.
The never-ending mystery of clouds is probably why the second appearing of our Saviour, Yahushua Messiah [the Hebrew name for Jesus Christ], will be accompanied with clouds:
“Behold, He comes with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even so, Amen” (Revelation 1:7).
“… And then shall they see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory” (Mark 13:26).
The above verses are among several verses which declare that the Day of the return of Yahushua Messiah will be an event accompanied with a multitude of clouds (see Daniel 7:13; Matthew 24:30; 14:62; Luke 21:27; Acts 1:9-11; 1Thessalonians 4:17).
The clouds that will appear with our Saviour’s return, could be dark, thundering, stormy clouds, with rushing winds and lightening flashes. Or they could be clouds that are brilliant white, billowing, full and serene.
The clouds that will appear with our Saviour’s return, may represent the accompaniment of multitudes of saints and/or angels.
The Cloud Upon the Mount
When Yahuwah Elohim [the Hebrew name for the LORD God] appeared on Mt. Sinai, to deliver the Ten Commandments to the children of Israel, His appearing was also accompanied with clouds — dark, thundering clouds:
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled…. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because Yahuwah [the LORD] descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. (Exodus 19:16-18)
As this passage reveals, the people trembled and the whole mountain quaked greatly, when Yahuwah descended with a thick cloud and fire!
Notice that when Yahuwah came down, there was ‘the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud.’
The voice of a trumpet will also be sounded at the moment of Yahushua’s second coming:
“…and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other” (Matthew 24:30-31).
The sound of a trumpet will accompany Messiah’s appearing, along with ‘the clouds’ — clouds perhaps being full of angels and saints.
On the Day of Messiah’s return, His appearing will indeed be a shocking and powerful event that will cause some men’s hearts to rejoice with trembling, and others to tremble with fear!
The Great Cloud
I like to think that the clouds accompanying Yahushua’s return will include the ‘great cloud of witnesses’ — the cloud that surrounds the saints while living here on the earth (Hebrews 12:1).
This ‘great cloud’, I speculate, has two qualities.
First, it has an inspiring quality about it, due to the many godly witnesses within it (possibly, this is why in the natural realm, some clouds appear as multitudes of faces looking down upon us).
Second, this ‘great cloud’ also has the provision of covering and hidenness within it. That is, it is a cloud that is able to keep someone out of sight, covered as for protection and safety (perhaps, this is why in the natural realm, clouds block the sunshine at times – “Your life is hidden with Messiah in Yahuwah.” (Colossians 3:3)).
Do You Know How The Clouds Float?
The study of the physical processes that lead to cloud formation is a complex study known as ‘cloud physics’:
“The precise mechanics of how a cloud forms and grows is not completely understood, but scientists have developed theories explaining the structure of clouds by studying the microphysics of individual droplets.” (Wikipedia: Cloud Physics)
With all our technological advances, scientists still ponder the same questions found in the book of Job, a book considered to be one of the most ancient books in existence:
Do you know how God gives the command and makes lightning flash from the clouds? Do you know how clouds balance, or float, in the sky, the work of God’s amazing skill? (Job 37:15-16)
Clouds are indeed mysterious things! Who has not stared in amazement at their wondrous beauty and ever-changing nature?
Clouds can cause us to look up with admiration and awe at some of their dramatic formations and colors.
The mysterious nature of clouds could be the reason why a very special cloud accompanied the visible manifestation of the Presence of Yahuwah — the Shekinah Glory Cloud — when the children of Israel were in the wilderness:
And Moses said unto Yahuwah [the LORD],… “they have heard that You, Yahuwah [LORD], are among this people, that You, Yahuwah, are seen face to face, and that Your cloud stands over them, and that You go before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.” (Numbers 14:13-14; see also Numbers 9:15-16; Exodus 40:38)
Yahuwah’s presence in our midst always seems to be accompanied with a cloud. His cloud has a covering quality to it, most likely needed to hide the overwhelming intensity of His glory. Without the cloud to cover Him, we could not endure His presence!
Clouds – A Reminder
Clouds, which never cease to fascinate and confound us, have a definite purpose in Yahuwah’s scheme of things.
Therefore, we should never forget that clouds will accompany the Day of our Saviour’s appearing. Every time we behold the clouds, we should bring to remembrance the great mystery and significance of Messiah’s return!
Yahushua [Jesus] told us to, “Be ready (for this very significant event)! – for the Son of Man comes at an hour when you think not” (Luke 12:40).
Messiah wants us to –
“Be on the lookout! Stay alert, watchful and prayerful! – for you do not know when the Master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or in the early morning” (see Mark 13:32-37).
Clouds serve as a reminder of the Master’s return, He whose coming will be with great power and glory – He, who is the King of kings and the Lord of lords – He, who is able to ride upon the wings of the wind, the clouds being as dust to His feet (see Psalms 18:5; Nahum 1:3; 1Timothy 6:15).
The Day of the return of Yahushua Messiah will be a moment of far-reaching magnitude!
The Day of His appearing will be as the Scriptures declare: “every eye shall see Him!” (Revelation 1:7).
With the arrival of modern technology, this overwhelming, mind-boggling event will actually be possible — for every eye to see the return of Messiah!
Lift Up Your Heads
Yahuwah Elohim, Creator of heaven and earth, is intensely interested in His children, who are found on this little speck of earth, within the immense Milky Way galaxy.
His supreme plan is to send His beloved Son to this earth once again, to gather His elect unto Himself!
This is beyond amazing!
The Day of the return of Messiah inspires surpassing joy and hopefulness for those who love Yahushua, but . . . to the ungodly and wicked, that Day inspires contempt and mockery, yet ultimately, they will know fear and dread:
And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars;
and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;
the sea and the waves roaring;
Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth:
for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
And then shall they see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
And when these things begin to come to pass,
then look up, and lift up your heads;
for your redemption draweth nigh.
(Luke 21:25-28)
As this passage tells us, there will be definite signs to be aware of, just prior to Messiah’s return.
Have you noticed the signs?
Surely these End Time Days are days of distresses and perplexities among the nations! Surely there are signs in the sun and the moon and the stars! Surely the events in Israel are confirming signs of Messiah’s soon return!
Messiah, ‘who was, and who is, and who is to come’ (Revelation 1:8), is returning soon —
coming with the clouds, and with power and great glory —
coming to gather His precious elect — His Bride!
Let us look up to the sky, and notice the clouds with much more attention, and with much more expectation!
For He is coming – with the clouds!
