Messiah: The Word Made Flesh

the-cross

In this writing, we will look at one particular aspect of the identity of Yahushua Messiah [the Hebrew name for Jesus Christ], that clearly and absolutely reveals how this man is different from all other human beings.

There are many details in the Bible about Yahushua Messiah and His message, to show that He is not an ordinary man! He is different from all other men.

To many, these details remain as mysteries, and therefore many are perplexed as to who Yahushua [Jesus] really is.

But when we look into the Scriptures with objective, child-like faith (Mark 10:15); when we determine to love the truth more than the traditions and commandments of men, then God’s mysteries no longer baffle us, because we can accept the greatness of His power and wisdom!

In the previous article (Messiah: Not an Ordinary Man), we looked at a few of the mysteries that definitely confirm that Yahushua Messiah is not an ordinary man. Yahushua Messiah [Jesus Christ] is beyond ordinary! Yes, He is an honourable man, a good and righteous man, and a prophet! But . . . He is much, much more!

In the previous article, we discussed Yahushua’s extraordinary birth — the virgin birth, which is indeed a great mystery (1Timothy 3:16). We also looked at Yahushua’s claim to be ONE with the Creator of the universe, Yahuwah Elohim [the Hebrew name for the LORD God]. We also looked at Yahushua’s qualifications as the sin-LESS ‘Lamb of God’ (John 1:29).

Now we will look at one more particular mystery surrounding the identity of Yahushua — His identity as “The Word of God.”

“The Word Was Made Flesh”

This phrase: “The Word Was Made Flesh” is another one of the mysterious qualities that sets Yahushua Messiah apart from ALL other men!

Yahushua is referred to as “the Word” of God and “the Word of Life”:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God….  14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (John 1:1,14)
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled (touched), of the Word of life (1John 1:1).
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. (1Timothy 3:16)

In the above passages, we are told that the Word of God, which is also the Word of Life, was made flesh!

The eternal Word of God is God, as the Scripture from John 1 tells us. This eternal Word of God became a living, breathing human being – the man, Yahushua Messiah. All-Mighty God, our Creator, Who is unlimited in His abilities, and infinitely superior to all human wisdom and reasoning, was born into this world as a human child.

God (meaning the God of the Bible, Yahuwah Elohim, the LORD God), was revealed and manifested in the flesh, through the man Messiah Yahushua! This is why the Scripture says, “they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (Matthew 1:23).

Let’s look at this in more detail.

The Word of the LORD Came

Before it happened that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us,” the Scriptures reveal that this ‘Word of God’ [Messiah] was already actively and intimately involved with the Old Testament prophets.

The phrase, ‘the Word of God,’ is seen in many English Bibles as “the Word of the LORD.

In the days when Yahushua walked on the earth, everyone understood Who “the Word of the LORD” was referring to.

The Word of the LORD was the One seen throughout the Old Testament writings!

This ‘Word of the LORD’ is the One who appeared to Abraham and all the Prophets.

This ‘Word of the LORD’ is the One who led the Israelites out of Egypt, through the wilderness, and into the Promised Land.

This ‘Word of the LORD’ is the One who came to the prophets and servants of Yahuwah:

The ‘Word’ of the LORD came … unto Abram,
came unto Samuel,
came unto Nathan,
came unto the prophet Gad,
came unto Solomon,
came unto Jehu, Elijah, King David, Shemaiah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Jonah, Haggai, and Zechariah
(See Genesis 15:1; 1Samuel 15:10; 2Samuel 7:4; 24:11; 1Kings 6:11; 16:1; 1Kings 18:1; 1Chronicles 22:8; 2Chronicles 11:2; Isaiah 38:4; Jeremiah 1:4; Ezekiel 3:16; Jonah 1:1; Haggai 2:20; Zechariah 4:8).

The above Scriptures tell us that the “Word” of the LORD came to all these men!

This ‘Word’ is Yahuwah Elohim, the God of the whole earth (Exodus 3:14-15 and Isaiah 44:6 and Isaiah 54:5 and John 8:58).

This ‘Word’ is the One who came!

This ‘Word’ is the One who came and gave instructions and commandments to all the Old Testament prophets. It is this ‘Word’ who, as a living, all-knowing, person, was Messiah Himself, in His pre-incarnate form.

Messiah came, He appeared in some form or fashion, to the saints of old, as the ‘Word of the LORD’ — the ‘Word of Yahuwah’.

This ‘Word of the LORD’ was God Himself, who later was ‘made flesh’!

This ‘Word of the LORD’ was born of a virgin, lived and dwelt among His disciples and the people. They saw and touched this “Word” for themselves!

This ‘Word of the LORD’ was manifested by becoming the human being — Yahushua [Jesus], of Nazareth of Galilee.

The Messenger of God

Messiah, who appeared as ‘the Word of the LORD,’ appeared to the prophets of old, sometimes being identified as either

  • the Angel [‘messenger’] of Yahuwah [the LORD] (Genesis 16:7-13; Exodus 3:2-16), or
  • the Angel [‘messenger’] the Redeemer (Genesis 48:16), or
  • the Angel [‘messenger’] of God (Exodus 14:19; Acts 7:37-38), or
  • the Angel [‘messenger’] of God’s Presence (Isaiah 63:9), or
  • the Angel [‘messenger’] of the Covenant (Malachi 3:1).

This particular ‘Angel’ [the Hebrew word is ‘messenger’] was not a created angel or being.

This particular ‘Angel’ was greater than any created angel, because He possessed attributes and abilities that are unique to God alone!

How can we know this?

We can know this by looking at the attributes of this particular ‘Angel’.

No created being, whether one of the angels of God or one of the demons of hell, could have the qualities that are attributed to this particular ‘Angel of God.’

burningbush-with-captionThis particular Angel/Messenger was Messiah, appearing to the Old Testament saints, in His pre-incarnate form.

  • This particular Angel/Messenger, spoke the Words of Yahuwah’s instructions and commandments, and is called God [Elohim] (Exodus 3:4-6);
  • He possesses Yahuwah’s name, the “I AM THAT I AM” (Exodus 3:14; 23:21);
  • He is to be obeyed (Exodus 23:20-23);
  • He is capable of redemption (Genesis 48:16; Isaiah 63:9);
  • He is capable of salvation (Exodus 23:20; Isaiah 63:9);
  • He is the mediator of God’s covenant (Malachi 3:1; 1Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 12:24);
  • He is capable of preserving and surrounding His people (Exodus 14:19; 23:20; Psalms 34:7).

No created being can possess these qualities!

Only Yahuwah Elohim can be all-powerful, all-knowing, capable of redemption and salvation, and is worthy to be worshipped and obeyed. All these qualities were attributed to the ‘Word of God’ — the ‘Word’ who was later made flesh!

That Rock Was Messiah

floatingrockWe are given a confirming witness regarding Messiah’s intimate connection with Moses and the children of Israel in 1Corinthians 10:4:

And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed [accompanied] them: and that Rock was Messiah [Christ]. (1Corinthians 10:4)

This Scripture reveals that the Rock that accompanied the Israelites was Messiah, the One who gives the spiritual drink of the water of everlasting life (John 4:10-14)!

Messiah in His pre-incarnate form accompanied Moses and the children of Israel, and led them through the wilderness.

This is a great mystery!

A spiritual Rock, who was Messiah. What can it mean? This is beyond comprehension. This is indeed a mystery!

Yet, this ‘Word of the LORD’, this Messenger of God, this Rock that accompanied them — all claim to have the attributes of the All-knowing, Creator God!

Nothing Too Hard For Him

When the apostle John tells us that the ‘Word of God’ became flesh, the prophets of old would have understood completely this revelation (Matthew 13:17; 1Peter 1:10-12).

The prophets of old knew of Yahuwah’s promises regarding Messiah. They had received Messiah’s commandments and instructions, because ‘the Word’ had come to them, appeared to them, and spoken to them.

And when the fullness of time came, this Word was made flesh!

The prophets of old would have been most eager to look upon, with their own physical eyes, this human being, Yahushua Messiah of Nazareth — this extraordinary man, who is the Word of Yahuwah Elohim made flesh!

Such a thing is beyond our understanding! It is mysterious! Yet that is to be expected, because the Creator of all things is unlimited in His abilities, while our own abilities and powers are definitely limited!

jesus_heals_the_widow_of_nains_son_-_william_brassey_holeThe Bible continually shows God coming among His people. The Scriptures clearly reveal the truth of the Presence of the ‘Word of the LORD’ [who is Messiah] coming among His people in various ways. It is this ‘Word’ who was made flesh!

This ‘WORD made flesh’ was the extraordinary man, Yahushua Messiah. He came to this earth and dwelt among us. The people saw the miracles He performed, and His gracious and loving nature.

Peter, James, and John even witnessed a glimpse of His glorious, divine nature on the Mount of Transfiguration (Mark 9:2-9). And as we discussed in the previous article, Yahushua was completely man and completely God!

Yahuwah, Who is a loving, merciful God, desires intimacy with His people. Over and over, the Scriptures reveal that Yahuwah desires to be among us, be in relationship with us:

And let them make Me [Yahuwah] a sanctuary (tabernacle); that I may dwell among them. (Exodus 25:8)

Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. (Exodus 40:34)

Yahuwah coming to dwell among us is exactly what the apostle John points out:

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

The Word of the LORD ‘tabernacled’ among us, just as He did at the time of Moses. God’s glory was once again coming to dwell among man just like He did in the Tabernacle in the wilderness. But this time by being born as a human.

‘The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us’ is indeed one of our heavenly Father’s great mysteries! This mystery requires us to remember the characteristics of The One who created us:

  • Yahuwah Elohim is the ALL-mighty Creator (Psalms 95:3-6; Psalms 145:3; Jeremiah 10:6-7,10)!
  • He is omnipresent, omniscient, and He is far, far bigger, greater, and wiser than any of us!
  • His abilities are infinite; and there is nothing too hard for Him! (See Job 33:12-13; Proverbs 21:30; Isaiah 45:22; Jeremiah 32:17; Ephesians 3:20.)

All Things Were Made By Him

Yahuwah’s WORD is all-powerful!

By His WORD, He created all things (John 1:1-4)!

And it is His WORD who was made flesh!

When we look carefully and humbly into Yahuwah’s written Word [the Bible], we can see that Yahushua Messiah is God Himself in the flesh:

“… that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Messiah [Christ]; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world has been hid in God, who created ALL things by Yahushua Messiah [Jesus Christ]” (Ephesians 3:8-9).

Psalms 33:6 confirms this above passage from Ephesians by telling us that “By the Word of the LORD [Messiah] were the heavens made!”

Yahushua Messiah Himself is THE WORD of Yahuwah (Revelation 19:13), by whom all things were created, and who spoke all the Words of Scripture, both Old and New Testament writings — either directly, or through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. (See: Gen 15:1; Num 36:5; Isa 38:4; Jer 32:26; Eze 6:1; Zec 7:8; Mal 1:1; Acts 1:16; 1Thess 1:5; and 2Pet 1:21.)

Like the apostle Paul and the prophet Isaiah, we must admit:

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out! (Romans 11:33)
8) For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith Yahuwah [the LORD].  9) For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts (are higher) than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8-9; see also Psalms 92:5; Psalms 139:17-18; Psalms 147:5)

The Tender-Hearted

The kingdom of God is an overwhelming mystery to those who rely on man-made understanding, or have not yet entered God’s Kingdom (Mark 4:11)!

When we begin to truly humble ourselves, and yield ourselves to believing all the Words written in the Scriptures [the Bible], we will begin to gain in knowledge and understanding of Yahuwah Elohim’s marvelous message!

Each one of us must look carefully, diligently, and humbly at what the written Scriptures actually say.

The tender-hearted gladly embrace the full testimony of the One Person who is not an ordinary man!

A tender-hearted person will receive the wisdom and testimony of the Scriptures, regardless of the mysteries!

His Name Shall Be Called The Mighty God

For in Him [Messiah] dwells all the full-ness of the Godhead bodily. (Colossians 2:9)

caravaggio-detail

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

The above Scriptures are just two of the many, many Scriptures that clearly reveal the deity of Yahushua Messiah! (See Isaiah 43:3a; 45:15,21; 60:16; Titus 2:10-14; 3:4-6; Jude 1:25).

Oh may it be . . . that we would always search the Bible for answers with a child-like heart, and see the goodness and mercy of the Almighty God!

The Bible is our heavenly Father’s gift to us, and it is the only source of truth about spiritual matters.

The Bible is meant to help us understand, line-upon-line, who Yahuwah Elohim is, who His Son is and what He has done on our behalf, and what His plan is!

The Bible must be the invention of either good men or good angels, or it is the invention of bad men or devils, or it is the invention of God.

It could not be the invention of good men or good angels, for they neither would or could make a book, and tell lies all the time they were writing it, saying, ‘Thus saith the Lord,’ when it was their own invention.

It could not be the invention of bad men or devils, for they would not make a book which commands all duty, forbids all sin, and condemns their souls to hell for all eternity.

Therefore, I draw this conclusion, that the Bible must be given by divine inspiration. —John Wesley

Jesus Christ is God in human flesh, and the story of His life, death, and resurrection is the only Good News the world will ever hear. —Billy Graham

As the centuries pass, the evidence is accumulating that, measured by His effect on history, Jesus is the most influential life that ever lived on this planet. — Kenneth S. Latourette

Let us be as the Psalmist. Let us cry out to Yahuwah, the Mighty One of Israel, and ask Him to give us understanding according to His (written) Word! (Psalms 119:169)

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord [Yahushua Messiah], which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. (Revelation 1:8)
Behold, I [Yahushua Messiah] come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. (Revelation 22:12-13)
Thus says Yahuwah [the LORD] the King of Israel, and His Redeemer Yahuwah [the LORD] of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside Me there is no God. (Isaiah 44:6; see also Exodus 3:13-15)

When we examine the Scriptures, and ask Father for His understanding,

then we will know that . . .

Yahushua Messiah is not an ordinary man!

Yahushua Messiah is the WORD made flesh!

Yahushua Messiah is the Prophet sent from God!
