King David desired to follow on to know Yahuwah Elohim [the LORD God] (Psalms 119:66,73). He had tasted of the lovingkindness of Yahuwah, therefore he wanted more (Psalms 36:7-10).
From the day I became a Believer in His Son, Yahushua [Jesus], my desire to know Him started to grow [and continues to grow]. As I began to walk in His Ways, obeying His Word, my knowledge of His truth increased. Then my soul began to find the peace and satisfaction I was longing for. The knowledge of Yahuwah’s truth was [and continues to be] as ‘cold waters to my thirsty soul!’
The prophet Hosea tells us, “Then shall we know, IF we follow on [‘follow; run after; pursue’] to know Yahuwah…” (Hosea 6:3a).
Hosea is giving us a glimpse of a truth — that the more we know of our Heavenly Father, the more we will discover the refreshing and rewarding nature of following Him!
If we follow after Him, seeking to know Yahuwah, then we shall know Him more and more; then we will want to continue to walk in obedience, pursuing more of knowing YaHuWaH!
Certainly, none of us can claim to possess an ‘insider’s secret’ to knowing Yahuwah. Our Heavenly Father is the Eternal, Living, Mighty Creator! And we are dust. Like the apostle Paul, we must admit:
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out! (Romans 11:33)
But there is something within us that yearns for the knowledge of the truth! As we saw in Seeking God With All Our Heart, it is the genuine desire of Born-Again Believers to know Yahuwah and His truth! And, it is our Heavenly Father’s desire that everyone would come to know Him, and begin to learn the knowledge of the truth (1Timothy 2:4)!
It is very obvious that knowledge of every kind is readily available today, which serves to confirm the words of the prophet Daniel:
“… the time of the end – many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” (Daniel 12:4)
There are many different kinds of knowledge to be found — knowledge of science/mathematics, knowledge of nature/animals, knowledge of the stars/outer space, the sea/water creatures, weather, history, medicine. The list is endless.
Lack of Knowing Yahuwah
The above list is not bad, in and of itself. Father’s creation, and all the things that have been discovered and invented — all these things are truly amazing and wonderful things to study.
Many people, however, have the knowledge of a thousand different things, yet they have little or no knowledge of God, of His goodness, and of His wisdom! There are many today who are wise in many things of this world. The prophet Jeremiah tells us that there are many who are “wise to do evil, but to do good, they have no knowledge” (Jeremiah 4:22)! And sadly, some will even say, “We desire not the knowledge of God” (Job 21:14).
Indeed, many of Father’s own children lack the true and full knowledge of Him, because they have rejected much of His WORD – the Bible. Because of this lack of knowing Yahuwah’s pure Word, many are failing to love and obey the Heavenly Father (see Hosea 4:6). Today we see the results of this lack of knowing Yahuwah, just as the apostle Paul warned Timothy:
“… in the last days … men shall be lovers of their own selves, … despisers of those that are good, … lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away” (2Timothy 3:1-5).
But Can We Truly Know Yahuwah?
Can we come to truly know Yahuwah Elohim, the LORD God of Israel? Yes, we can.
Coming to know the Heavenly Father is not difficult. He desires for everyone to know Him, and to come to the knowledge of the truth. He has made it very simple to know Him, as we saw in Faith Comes!
It is true that knowing Yahuwah is a life-time process, yet each one of us can take steps toward knowing Him better. Simple ‘baby steps’ in obeying the Word of Yahuwah is the key to our knowing Him!
[If you have never begun the First Step in knowing the Heavenly Father, then please see the brief article:Good News!]
When our knowledge of Yahuwah’s Word increases, and we walk in His truth, then grace and peace is multiplied toward us (2Peter 1:2)! If we will take it to heart and apply it, then the knowledge of the truth of Yahuwah’s Word is able to edify us — strengthening our inner-most being, as the apostle Paul said:
… the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified (Acts 20:32).
And as Hezekiah, Job, King David, and Paul declared, we can also discover that the knowledge of Yahuwah is good, perfect, wonderful, and excellent!
There is a caution to consider in our quest to ‘press on’ to know Yahuwah. We must guard against a knowledge of Yahuwah that is only ‘head-knowledge.’ Head-knowledge alone leaves us empty and without the growing increase of our life of faith.
The evidence of possessing ‘head-knowledge’ only is characterized by two things:
- a refusal to adjust our ways, and
- a refusal to turn away from disobedience.
But if we begin to 1.) make the adjustments and 2.) begin to obey the Word of Yahuwah, then we begin to gain what is called ‘heart-knowledge.’ It is only when we allow the Scriptures to change us that we truly begin to ‘know’ the heavenly Father.
Heart-knowledge is the intimate knowledge of Yahuwah and His WORD, along with our obedience to His Word. The Holy Spirit will bear witness with our spirit when we are walking in agreement and harmony with Father’s Word and truth (1John 5:6b), resulting in a joy of our obedience.
Heart-knowledge begins to increase when we have a firm commitment to obeying the Scriptures as they are, and not a twisted version of men’s doctrines! We must be seeking the purity of Father’s Word and His guidance, for ourselves, earnestly desiring to repent of any disobedience!
[It is so important that we make sure our version of God’s Word [the Bible] is pure, and does not contain any of men’s twisted additions and eliminations! (see the warnings in Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:5,6; Revelation 22:18,19) The safest version to stay with is the King James version. If you are sincere in following Yahuwah, then He will be faithful to make sure you understand the purity of His Word!]
We will gain a deep conviction of the Holy Spirit’s leading whenever we maintain the principle of establishing our direction through two or three witnesses that are in harmony with God’s Word (2Corinthians 13:1b). In this way, we combine our head-knowledge of the Scriptures, with our obedience to the Scriptures, and thereby, we begin to know Yahuwah, in our heart, as a loving Father!
[The two or three witnesses are Scriptures and/or circumstances that are in complete harmony with God’s Word, confirming the truth of His direction.]
The Spirit of Adoption
Knowing Yahuwah as our Daddy, comes from obeying what the Scriptures tell us, and being obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit! Father wants a relationship with us, whereby we talk with Him and He with us, and we freely call to Him as “Abba Father” — our Daddy.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father (Romans 8:14, 15).
As this passage teaches us, we are ‘adopted sons’ of the Most High, and we must desire to maintain our relationship with Father as obedient children. Every parent desires obedient children, including Abba Father. And obeying Father is easy when we come to Him as His little child (see Matthew 11:28-30 and 1John 5:2-5).
Our knowledge of the truth of Yahuwah’s Word must be joined with our obedience to His Word! As we study His Word for ourselves, and obey Him, then more and more, the sensitive and gentle love of the Holy Spirit will be shed abroad in our hearts (Romans 5:5).
It is the agape love, Father’s self-less love, that comes from the Holy Spirit, coupled with the purity of Yahuwah’s Word, that will edify us and guide us. Our obedience to Abba Father’s Word are the steps needed to gaining the abundant life. This is the essence of abiding in Him (John 15:10; 1John 2:6).
By being sensitive and obedient to the Holy Spirit’s leading, we will avoid the emptiness and the hypocrisy that can result from ‘head-knowledge’ only. Knowledge alone results in being puffed up with pride (1Corinthians 8:1).
Knowledge of Many Things
EVERY man naturally desires knowledge; but what good is knowledge without the fear of God?
What would it profit us to know the whole Bible by heart, or to know the principles of all the philosophers, if we live without grace and the love of God?
There are many things the knowledge of which does little or no good to the soul. He who concerns himself about things other than those which lead to salvation is very unwise. Indeed a humble rustic who serves God is better than a proud intellectual who neglects his soul.
If you think you know many things and understand them well enough, realize at the same time that there is much you do not know. Hence, do not pretend wisdom, but admit your ignorance.
If you wish to learn and appreciate something worth while, then love to be unknown and considered as nothing. To think of oneself as nothing, and always to think well and highly of others is [a] most perfect wisdom.
All men are frail, but you must admit that none is more frail than yourself. Vanity of vanities and all is vanity, except to love God and serve Him alone. —Thomas a Kempis
How Can We Come to Know Yahuwah?
Let’s look now at a few Scripture verses that reveal how we can come to know Yahuwah.
The prophet Hosea’s exhortation to ‘follow on to know Yahuwah’ is an expression of Father’s desire — that we would stay close to Yahuwah, and ‘follow’ Him, in order to know Him.
Following Him, and knowing Him, can be summed up in a simple phrase: To obey is better! (1Samuel 15:22)
In a nutshell, here are eight Scriptures that give us clues of how to obey Yahuwah — and thus how to know Him, and how to know His Truth:
1. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. (John 17:3) Knowing Yahushua Messiah is the First Step!
2. Yahushua said: … believe the works (that I do): that ye may know, and believe [become a ‘DO-er’], that the Father is in me, and I in him. (John 10:38) Believing and Doing Yah’s Word is an on-going Step!
3. Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you. (Exodus 31:13) Keeping Yahuwah’s Sabbaths is a vital, on-going Step!
4. Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them. And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God. (Eze 20:12, 20) Again, the importance of keeping Yahuwah’s Sabbaths is a Key Step in knowing Yahuwah!
5. Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen [Yahushua]: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. (Isaiah 43:10) Father emphasizes again that knowing His Chosen One, His Son, is necessary for knowing Him!
6. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (1John 5:13) We see it again: the Word emphasizes Belief in Yahushua and Doing His Word as an on-going Step!
7. Yahushua said: If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. (John 7:17) One more Scripture that stresses the importance of being a Do-er of Yah’s Word in order to know God!
8. This last verse is simply for our comfort: But if any man love God [Yahuwah, the mighty One of Israel], the same is known of Him. (1Corinthians 8:3)
Willing and Obedient
If we are seeking and praying for a heart to be willing and obedient to Yahuwah and His Word, then coming into the knowledge of the truth is possible and attainable!
Learning and obeying Father’s Word as it is [with no twisted deceptions], cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit, and discerning the leading of the Holy Spirit, are all vital steps for pressing in, and following on, to know Yahuwah! When we are willing and obedient, we shall know such blessings as —
- Being a peculiar [special] treasure unto Yahuwah (Exodus 19:5)
- It will be well with us (Jeremiah 7:23)
The end-time days are ‘perilous times,’ which is why Yahushua exhorted us to, “Take heed that ye be not deceived ” (Luke 21:8). With knowledge of every kind increasing at a rapid and blurry rate, let us be watchful! Let us consider very carefully, that what we are taking in as ‘knowledge’ is actually God’s knowledge — pure, truth-FULL, good, and edifying to the saving of our souls!
Let us guard against the utter foolishness of :
… ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2Tim 3:7).
In conclusion, with Yahuwah’s enabling grace, we can learn and come to the knowledge of the truth, by hearing Yahuwah’s Word, by repenting of any disobedience, and by being obedient to His truth.
Let us therefore ask Father daily for a genuine love of the Truth — that is, pray for a love for knowing Yahuwah, as our Daddy, for knowing His Words, for obeying His Words, and for knowing the leading of His Holy Spirit, as He leads us into all Truth.
Let us earnestly press in — follow, run after, pursue — and follow on, to know Yahuwah!
